July is less than two weeks away, which means summer break is about to begin! Before the kids are officially out from school, and schedules become packed with sun-filled activities, take the time to make sure your home is ready for the season.

Check out our summer home maintenance checklist for some tips that will keep your home looking and functioning at its best all summer long.

Test All Detectors

Maintaining a safe environment for you and your family is the main purpose of a home maintenance checklist. And so, it’s no surprise that checking your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they’re working properly is at the top of this list.

Tune-up Your AC

If you have an air conditioning unit or system in your home, this is the time to check that it is working at its best and hopefully prevent any breakdowns later. A properly functioning AC system is also the key to keeping your power bill low this summer! So, make sure you clean your AC’s coils and change your air filters.

Inspect The Roof

Edmonton summers often include a few storms…with plenty of rain. Prevent any costly water damage by having your roof inspected to catch any necessary repairs before they turn into unwanted summer problems.

Check Your Deck

Many of us will be spending a lot of time on our decks over the next few months, so it’s the perfect time to check for any signs of rotting or any protruding nails that need to be hammered in. This is also the time to see if water is being absorbed into the boards of your deck instead of being repelled – if so, you’ll need to reseal the surface.

Examine Windows

Check your window’s sealants to ensure that there aren’t any open areas on both the inside and outside. Caulk any gaps you find and replace any weather-stripping that looks faulty. Properly sealed windows will help keep your home cool when you’re trying to beat the outside heat.

Wash Your Home’s Exterior

Keep your home looking its best by giving the exterior a good cleaning. Using a pressure washer will help make this task a lot easier and will also get rid of any dirt and mildew. This is especially important if you are planning on doing any exterior painting. TIP: Cover any doors, plants, or outlets before you start washing!
